·         Civic Engagement

o   Goals for Voter Registration:  As stressed in the civic engagement training, it is critical to know your goals by state, month, and week.  For each voter registration even (site registration/canvass) you should have set goals prior to the start of each event.  Here is a quick breakdown by state, month, and week:

By Month
(10 months)

By Week
(41 weeks)

DC

o   Activity and Event Locations: Please remember to follow the perimeters of your unit’s charter when selection locations for activities and events.  Units are encouraged to collaborate with one another, but not to engage in activities in another unit’s district without prior consultation.  We have a large goal before us and would hate to have duplicative efforts in a single location.

o   Primary Dates: As we continue registering our community members to vote, we must recognize the primary elections that are quickly approaching.  Here are the primary dates for your state:

§  DC: April 3, 2012

§  Maryland: April 3, 2012

§  Virginia: March 6, 2012

o   VAN Training Webinar: In order to give more of our members access to the VAN we will be hosting another round of VAN Training Webinars.  You have 2 opportunities to join us, either: Monday, February 20th at 8:00pm orThursday, February 23rd at 8:00pm.  If you would like to participate, you must RSVP by sending an email with your name, county, and state to me at RGuerra@naacpnet.org by Friday, February 17th at 5:00pm.  This training will require a computer, access to the internet, and a phone.  This training will include: how to insert new registrants into the VAN system, how to properly create a batch of new registered voters, how to designate new voters as volunteers (when they indicate they want to volunteer for the NAACP), how create events (“We’re doing a voter registration drive a Small High School next Saturday.”), and how to sign up potential volunteers for those events.
