Dear NAACP Members and Supporters:
One hundred years of making a difference for people of color have passed; seventy-four years of desegregating Prince George’s County have passed; signs of “Whites only” and Colored only” are all gone from the courthouse in Upper Marlboro. We are now into the 21st Century.
African American lawyers are not only welcomed and treated with respect in the Courthouse, but serve as; Chief
Administrative Judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit and on both the District and Circuit Courts along with others in the Courthouse. All former county agencies once headed by whites as well as the county government have changed. They are now headed by an African American County Executive, African American Chair of the County Council, Chief Administrative officers, Fire Chief, Police Chief, and an African American female County Attorney. The county has an elected school board with an African American female Chairman, an African American male Vice Chairman and the fourth African American Superintendent of Schools.
Yet racism still exists; disparate impact still occurs and hate crimes strike too many people of color. The economic downturn disproportionately impacts people of color, especially in employment, housing and health care. The criminal justice system houses far more African Americans than their percentage in the general population. Academic achievement gaps for African American children still exist.
We need your involvement to make Prince George’s County number one in all categories inclusive of educational level of attainment and per capita income. Your support says that you are committed to eliminating discrimination across the board as we all share the same core values for our children, our families and our county.
